Directors will gather for the first of two annual face-to-face meetings in the Washington Metropolitan area to reconnect from the fall gathering six months prior. This will be an opportunity to welcome new members to the network and to focus on pressing quality issues as determined by the steering committee. The one and a half-day workshop will highlight the work of fellow colleagues on their individual State initiatives, and foster innovative discussions on the latest clinical research.
This 90-minute webconference will address some of the fundamental questions that state medical directors are facing in regards to the design and implementation of DM programs, help participants gain a realistic understanding of the potential impact of DM interventions, and identify and highlight lessons learned and resources related to Medicaid DM programs. Guest speakers include:
- David Atkins, M.D., M.P.H., Chief Medical Officer, Center for Outcomes and Evidence, AHRQ and
- Melanie Bella, Vice President for Policy, Center for Health Care Strategies (CHCS).

Overview: Directors gathered for the first face-to-face meeting of the Medicaid Medical Directors Learning Network in Chicago, IL. As the initial gathering of the Learning Network, the kick-off workshop sought to provide an opportunity for medical directors to meet and learn about each other, to discuss the use of evidence in coverage decision-making, utilizing a State case example and reviewing the evidence on bariatric surgery, to discuss strategies for improving the quality of heath care services used by Medicaid enrollees, and to identify possible topics and approaches for future learning network activities.
